The Best of Both Worlds
I think one of the things that distinguishes a swimming and diving program at Grinnell from other programs, first our facility, we have an incredible indoor 50 meter pool. And what that allows us to do is to carry a very large roster size. We're extremely inclusive, not limiting people by their background in swimming. So we have a very diverse team in the sense of years of experience. And we carry a team roster size of 80 plus swimmers and divers on the team. Student athletes at Grinnell is heavily laden on the first part students, as coaches we're constantly looking for, for student athletes that are really engaged academically, and that needs to be their first priority. But that doesn't mean limiting their opportunities athletically. We usually do the best in both realms when we're in swim season, and they're really heavily engaged in their academics. The ability to manage more than one thing very intensely at a time is definitely inherent in being a student athlete at Grinnell. I would say all of our students are driven. But to be able to physically drive yourself at the same time you're intellectually driving yourself kind of takes you to the next level. I think there's a variety of benefits for students to participate in athletics, especially at a school like Grinnell. Probably the first and foremost is that sense of belonging. prior to getting to campus, they already have a team and family that is looking out for them that's engaging them that is mentoring them. And then there are certain experiences that you will have as a student athlete and be able to connect with alums that have had that experience to at Grinnell which really enhances the value of being a student athlete. People ask me why Grinnell? Why would I come to Grinnell as a student or a student athlete? I say you can get the best of both worlds. You're not only having outstanding academic facilities, you're having outstanding athletic facilities, and that enhances your experience. But to be here, in the pool, on the field, in the classroom, with students from all over the country that have intentionally chosen a community like Grinnell really sets us above. I've been at Grinnell for almost 25 years as a coach, and a professor in physical education. And there are a variety of things that keep me here and people say why Grinnell? Well for me. It's students working collaboratively with faculty and staff to create something better. Day in day out, year after year. And it's a great recipe for an incredible experience.
