- Grinnell professors want you to succeed, and they want to help. That’s one reason they hold office hours.
- So go see your professors during their office hours. Get to know them a little bit outside of class.
- Connecting with your professors can help them help you explore opportunities in a relaxed way.
Connections with Professors
Grinnell is such a small community and the professors are here and available to meet with you at any point. So the idea of Open Office Hours is something that you should, and I did take advantage of, and it served me well. I'm back here on campus. And I've met with two or three professors for hour long chats about how I'm doing it as a person. And that's because I developed relationships while I was here, that went beyond my class selections. Went to the heart of what do I want to do in life? How am I preparing myself well for those experiences and opportunities? So seek out those professors-- some of the professors I'm connected with are not just my mentors. So I took a religion in US Public Life course with a professor whose daughter was looking at the same study abroad program that I did. And he reached out to me and said, "Did you talk to my daughter about your experience doing this?" And that's the kind of personal connection that you make with professors outside of the regular class mentorship that they provide you with.
