    Intellectual Community

    Joining a Challenging, Supportive Community

At Grinnell, your peers will be some of the best student scholars from around the world. If you think that sounds intimidating, think again. “It allows you to be challenged by these students — but also, they are peers, so they help you along the way,” says Tom Henehan ’21.

Grinnell’s faculty are accessible and dedicated to teaching: students here develop meaningful relationships with their professors. You and your classmates might even be invited to your professor’s home for dinner.

In terms of the intellectual community here, it's a lot different than what I experienced in high school. Coming here, everybody was the big fish in high school academically. It's a great school and it allows you to be challenged by these students, but also they're your peers. So they help you along the way. They challenge us in ways that let you grow as a student, which I really appreciate and allows everybody to engage in academics a little more. The faculty at Grinnell are always very accessible. They all have "office hours," which are like times you can walk in and talk with them. And then a lot of them are open to meet outside of office hours as well. They even invited classes over their houses and stuff. So this is a really great community that allows, uh, allows you to foster relationships with professors in a way that may be a larger school wouldn't. Grinnell definitely invests in their students, whether it's through time or money, and this allows the students to pursue what they're interested in. They also allow you to pursue like internships. Like they funded my internship. They funded me to go to conferences. They offered for me to go to Los Angeles. And that investment into the students is rewarded through both alumni giving generous donations as well as alumni coming back and giving advice to younger students.
