    Fine Arts

    The Arts are for Everyone

At Grinnell, students who major in the fine arts — music, dance, theatre, studio art, etc. — can take advantage of top-notch facilities and talented faculty. But it doesn’t end there.

An active interest in the arts is part of being a well-rounded, liberally educated human being. All motivated students are encouraged to participate in music ensembles, plays, and more.

“Grinnell wants to make sure that if you’re passionate about something; then you have the opportunity to engage in it,” says Spencer Clark ’23.

The Fine Arts at Grinnell are great because you get to explore both performance and the critical analysis side of things. So you get to explore the role of music or dance or art within society, which is a very important component of the Fine Arts. And there are so many ways to get involved. You can be a part of ensembles, community events, it's very welcoming. I chose to be a music major at Grinnell because there's free unlimited lessons as a music major. So I wanted to be able to take instruments without having to worry about paying extra. And then also the curriculum here for the Music majors pretty loose, where it's not just focused on classical music. It's focused on a wide variety like I've taken a course on hip hop, and I've taken a course on digital music making and jazz traditions and like that's just sort of what I'm more interested in. So I'm glad that Grinnell had the breadth to supply what I wanted to learn about. Fine Arts, I feel like encompassed in our Bucksbaum Center for the Arts. It has photography, visual arts, dance and performance, music of all kind. I'm particularly proud of our Egan Early Music Hall where we have the ancestors of a lot of different instruments. So as a non-Fine Arts student myself, I'm still actively encouraged to engage in the theatre department here. I personally have taken a class in the theatre department which was a performance studies course. And I was able to engage in a play, Red Velvet, in the past without even worrying about declaring a major. It just... Grinnell wants to make sure that if you're passionate about something, then you have the ability to engage in it.
