    Small College. Global Impact.

A Grinnell education will provide you with the tools and contacts you need to pursue issues of purpose and social justice on campus and in the wider world.

“It’s a small school. We have a really close-knit community. But it has a huge footprint and ripple effect,” says Sarah Burnell ’14. She found a supportive community at Grinnell — people she still calls her best friends — they help her continue dreaming and pursuing her goals.

Ki Harris ’14, who is now executive director of the Freedom Network Project, says that the powerful academic and social experiences he had at Grinnell gave him skills to work for a better world.

I left Grinnell deeply passionate about reinvesting this really powerful academic and social experience that I had had into communities. This idea of leveraging the tools that I've developed, the experiences that I've benefited from, in a way that's going to help make the world better is a theme that runs all through Grinnell's campus. Grinnell definitely has a worldwide reputation. Whenever I'm traveling, I often wear a Grinnell sweatshirt because I inevitably run into another Grinnellian or somebody who knew somebody who went to Grinnell. So it's a small school, we have a really close-knit community. But it has a huge footprint and ripple effect. I came in a really good student and really good at kind of memorizing and getting the right answer and I knew how to do that. And then you get to Grinnell and it's like, "Maybe there isn't a right answer?" Right? Like actually question all those right answers and think really deeply and critically about everything. And it was this really different and new way of thinking for me that was really inspiring. And then to be around all these other people who are just as passionate and are sort of thinking and questioning just as hard was really incredible. Thank you to Grinnell for helping me find my best friends and finding the people that have supported me and continue to do so and connect me and help me keep dreaming and pursuing those things.
