    Finding Your Place

    Build Your Community

At Grinnell, you can find your own community — maybe more than one — that will support you and help you explore your identity and ideas, says Jordan Maurice Ryan ’24.

Ryan found his place and his sense of belonging on the men’s basketball team, as well as in Men of Color, a Black men’s student group at Grinnell. “It’s truly a brotherhood. We’re really connected,” Ryan says.

Ryan advises you to try new things and check out different groups on campus. “As long as you stay open to new ideas and new perspectives, you will find your sense of belonging at Grinnell.”

Being able to play basketball is really important to me. So I'm glad that Grinnell allowed me opportunity to play here. Coach Dave has been really open to me already. And the guys have been open to me. And I really enjoyed being around them. It's one of the best parts of my days always. I believe I really found my place at Grinnell when I joined "Men of Color." It consists of African American men on campus, and it really allowed me to, you know, have a sense of belonging because I can relate to them. We understand each other, we want to help each other grow. They're kind of certain as a father figure in that we call each other brothers. It's truly a brotherhood and we're really connected. They're definitely going to be a big part of my experience at Grinnell over my four years. If you're someone considering coming to Grinnell College, I'd say to, "Try new things, try different groups, or be connected with different types of people. As long as you stay open to new ideas and new perspectives. You will find your sense of belonging at Grinnell."
